Questions for Steve and Bill: Dr. William Gonda, Pediatrician

While Walt and I will come up with our own questions for Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Apple’s Steve Jobs, who will be appearing in an historic joint interview at our D conference next Wednesday night, I was curious what others–some tech folks and some not in the industry–would ask the tech legends if they could in this post.

Here’s the second question from my kids’ pediatrician, who also happens to be an Apple fanboy of the highest order, showing up at Macworlds with the joyous fervor of a true believer. Interestingly, Dr. Gonda asks about instant-on computers. (But he’s still getting an iPhone the millisecond it comes out.)

What’s happening is that we might, in fact, be at a time in our history where we’re being domesticated by these great big societal things, such as Facebook and the Internet. We’re being domesticated by them, because fewer and fewer and fewer of us have to be innovators to get by. And so, in the cold calculus of evolution by natural selection, at no greater time in history than ever before, copiers are probably doing better than innovators. Because innovation is extraordinarily hard.
