WiMac?

somethingintheair.jpgWith just days to go before Steve Jobs takes the stage in San Francisco for his annual Macworld Expo keynote, the banners are being hoisted at Moscone Center, the site of next week’s expo. And, as often happens, their ambiguous messages are causing feverish speculation among the Mac faithful. The text on this year’s banners: “There’s something in the air.”

Now, to what could these banners possibly be referring? Streaming iTunes movie rentals to the Apple TV? A genetically modified iVirus? The iSmell? A featherlight subnotebook? Or something else entirely? Say a WiMax-enabled MacBook Pro?

No, they’re talking about the unbathed iPod protesters from Greenpeace outside.

Hey don’t knock Greenpeace! In fact, I think “There Something in the Air” might not just mean new wireless gadget introductions, but the unveiling of Apple’s new green initiative. Remember, just last May, Jobs published his letter addressing the company’s new effort to be more environmentally conscious.

While it’s tempting to see the Huffington Post’s Pulitzer as a “big win for new media,” or something like that, the real story is that these organizations — the Huffington Post, the New York Times, the Washington Post — are becoming more like each other. Old media and new media are increasingly antiquated terms.
