Dell Should Buy Acer, Bernstein Says

There has been speculation for months now that Dell (DELL) at some point will make a big acquisition. Most of the thinking has been about diversification moves. But Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi proposes an idea that would boost Dell’s stake in the PC business: consider buying Acer.

In a research note today, Sacconaghi asserts that the PC sector is ripe for consolidation. He notes that the top 5 PC vendors accounted for 56 percent of industry units in 2008, and that the top 10 accounted for nearly 70 percent. It’s even lower than the high-def TV market, where the top 5 have 60 percent share, and the top 10 about 80 percent.

About Voices

Along with original content and posts from across the Dow Jones network, this section of AllThingsD includes Must-Reads From Other Websites — pieces we’ve read, discussions we’ve followed, stuff we like. Six posts from external sites are included here each weekday, but we only run the headlines. We link to the original sites for the rest. These posts are explicitly labeled, so it’s clear that the content comes from other websites, and for clarity’s sake, all outside posts run against a pink background.

We also solicit original full-length posts and accept some unsolicited submissions.
