China's Internet Population Hits 338 Million

The total number of China’s Internet users reached 338 million as of June 30, representing a 13.4 percent increase from the end of 2008, according to the latest report by the China Internet Network Information Center, a government-affiliated Web research organization.

Some other highlights from the report:

  • As much as 94 percent of the Internet population — about 320 million people — use broadband connections to access the Web. However, broadband Internet speeds lag far behind more developed countries.
  • Over 80 percent of Internet users surf the Web at home. The number of people going Internet cafés decrease by 7 percent since end of 2008. Only 5 percent of the Internet population accesses the Internet from the workplace.

About Voices

Along with original content and posts from across the Dow Jones network, this section of AllThingsD includes Must-Reads From Other Web Sites — pieces we’ve read, discussions we’ve followed, stuff we like. Six posts from external sites are included here each weekday, but we only run the headlines. We link to the original sites for the rest. These posts are explicitly labeled, so it’s clear that the content comes from other Web sites, and for clarity’s sake, all outside posts run against a pink background.

We also solicit original full-length posts and accept some unsolicited submissions.
