BoomTown's Apple iPad Day, Starring Walt Mossberg (Plus a Steve Jobs Cameo!)

Here is one of two videos I made at the launch of the iPad by Apple in San Francisco yesterday, stalking my All Things Digital partner, Walt Mossberg, to get his take on the event.

We talked about whether Apple could innovate enough with hardware and software to make a tablet computer finally become popular outside of Silicon Valley, as well as a range of other issues, from multimedia to mobility to price.

I did a pre- and post-event video interview with Walt about the new device and on my Flip camera caught a bit of him kibitzing with Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs about the iBooks application, battery life and whether Walt could write his eventual review of the iPad on, well, the iPad.

Here it is:

I'd love to see more of that Jobs/Mossberg interaction. Could you strap the Flip to Walt's forehead next time? :)

    great stuff, thanks Kara.

It seemed that Walt and Steve were doing the Larry David eye lock routine at the end. Funny.

Is there an unedited version of Walt and Steve’s chat?
A lot of people would love to see that.

I's love to see ANY of that Jobs/Mossberg interaction. Unfortunately it won't play on my iPod touch or my iMac. Won't play on anyone's iPad either.

“kibitzing” This word does not primarily mean chatting or discussing. It means offering advice (usually unwelcome or unsolicited). It means approximately the same thing as “back-seat driving.” Schmoozing is closer to the mark. (see: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/SCHMOOZE)

No e-ink means its not a real e-book reader replacement, although I suspect it should lower Kindle prices nonetheless.

    I can't tell if I love or hate Kara… ;)

Wholly crap what a complete waste of bandwidth! This Kara person is the most annoying person I have ever had to endure…

iWork is a huge plus … and if works as well as demonstrated, then I am on board. This feature is not yet fully appreciated by most people and because other applications are sure to follow, I believe Apple has done it right. The keyboard dock is also a plus, as is the option of 3G and the new pricing structure including no contract. I'll now take an iPhone without the $30 a month data plan if I can get a better deal with the iPad.

I am in the market for a notebook and waited to see what Apple was going to introduce. I use an iMac 24 inch and iPhone, and the iPad may very well take the place of a new notebook for me.

I was a little freaked out seeing Steve Jobs speaking in the wild. Man that guy is intimidating.

Doesn’t that fact that flash won’t load and this link to an mp4 version of the video prove how crappy flash is? It’s a CPU and battery hog that crashes.

    html5 anyone?

HEy check an ipad review by a 7 year old.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91UuAiXF2ag

This is great! On a flip too.

Could you start using actual video files instead of flash? Larger == better.

    thanks!

This is neither a notebook nor a tablet. The whole point of a tablet is that it is keyboard-less. This means it allows you to write on the screen. Some tablets then translate your handwriting into text for word processing. The iPad simply cannot do this.

Because you can't do multitasking you can't read a book and take notes at the same time. I mean not that any student would want to do that now, would they. Steve says they don't need to take notes – unless they buy 2 iPads.

This device is ONLY a reader.

  • majorplonquer

I agree. Please stop using Flash. All us poor iPhone owners can't do Flash. Steve says we don't need it and its up to you to provide the video in other formats. And who's to argue with Steve Jobs?

You shot too close to Walt's face – you need to pull back somewhat and give a wider view – too much saliva, yuck! It was hard to focus on the content!

You shot the video too close to Walt's face – you need to pull back somewhat and get more of his head in the frame – too much saliva – yuck! It was hard to concentrate on the content!

I have only spent a short time hands-on with the iPad–too short to fully run it through its paces and formally review it yet. But, after attending the rollout of the new device today, and trying out some of its features for myself, I have some first impressions.

it played on my iMac just fine.

Was it my imagination or did Kara interrupt Walt every 3 seconds? Walt was unable to complete a single sentence without her interjecting—very annoying. She had her camera set on maximum zoom on Mossberg's face, like this was the scene from Blair Witch Project where the woman is crying and snot is coming down her nose. Too close for comfort.

Walt had a good short interview with Steve. Good questions and analysis. He comes across as an Apple fanboi at times, though I do too.

He’s an a–hole. That guy has $2 billion that he made from figuring out ways to steal royalties from artists, and that’s the bottom line. You can’t really trust anybody like that.
