E-Readers: Walt Tells You How To Choose

Interviewed on Digits today, Walt notes three key features to consider when purchasing an e-reader: Readability, battery life and the ease of purchasing books. He also looks ahead to the next wave of tablet computers that will offer e-reading functionality such as the Apple (AAPL) iPad.

Agreed Walt, along with price they are the top 3 features any consumer needs to think about before purchasing. In Australia we only have the Kindle and the BeBook to choose between but am awaiting the iPad patiently when it launches later next month.

I would consider battery life to be the most important when I buy one. I usually read books/e-books during long trips and I would want my e-book reader to last as long as my travel time. Best way to let boredom pass unnoticed!Ü

One reason I choose to read ebooks on a pda–like the Treo –is portability. It's a small, multi use device; it is always there and does not require extra chargers, extra devices to carry. It does everything. Another is that it has removable batteries. When one runs out–pop in another. They weigh hardly anything. And the device is cheap enough so that for a little more than $100 on ebay you can get a brand new one that will function as a phone, mp3 player and ebook reader combine–not to mention other functions.

When will Walt Mossberg come out with his review of the iPad. I really want to buy one but don't want to until I read his review. Is he going to wait until April 3?

The principle is right, but I wouldn't recommend anybody spend any money on a Treo in this decade. For $99 you can get a brand new iPhone and the reading experience is much better: the screen is larger, you flip through pages very naturally, the typography is world class, you can download new books over 3G or Wi-Fi, and there are dozens (if not hundreds) of reading apps, with easy access to both free and paid titles from many vendors. Kobo Books is great, Classics is great, Stanza, Eucalyptus. Or for $199 you can get an iPod touch if you don't want a phone contract.

If you need more battery time than the built-in battery, you just get a juice pack and attach it to the dock connector. There are cases with juice packs built-in also.
No need to take the device apart or even power it down.

Another advantage is if you get an iPad later, all the same books will just sync over in one step.

It is quite true that buying a Treo now–when Palm's future is in doubt–raises some issues. Note, however, that you can buy a 680 brand new on ebay for $125. I got a useful used one as a backup for $65 including shipping. It will function well as a GSM phone, MP3 player and ebook reader, among other things. It is still a useful and economical decision. To be sure, it will now never have features like wi-fi or multitasking and there will come a point where it is simply too outdated. That point is not now. If I had to choose something else—it wouldn't be the iPhone. Droid looks like a much better choice, with SD card slots, removable batteries and they are taking care of that application limit, too.

Those are good keypoints to take into account before buying an e-reader. I think that e-readers like the Kindle have a very good future because they are easier on the eyes than tablets which have backlit screens and they are very specialized to what they are meant to do: display books with crisp and easy to see characters, just like paper.
E-readers are the ideal choice for people who search for a product that allows them to easily read and store their book collection and don’t need to watch movies, play games, surf the web, etc. that a more expensive tablet allows them to do. Because they are very specialized at what they do, they don’t compete directly with tablets like the iPad.

He’s an a–hole. That guy has $2 billion that he made from figuring out ways to steal royalties from artists, and that’s the bottom line. You can’t really trust anybody like that.
