BlackBerry 6 Drops in Q3

Research in Motion’s (RIMM) forthcoming operating system BlackBerry 6 will arrive at market in the third quarter of calendar 2010 (sometime between the first days of July and the end of September). That’s the word from company co-CEO Mike Lazaridis who stoked expectations for the new OS during an analyst call Monday.

With a new WebKit-based Web browser, a redesigned media player and multitouch support, BlackBerry 6 is the OS RIM should have rolled out years ago, one that will make its smartphones a bit less dusty and perhaps help it move beyond its traditional business strongholds. As Lazaridis said this morning, “We’ve done one of the biggest overhauls of our system in years.”

About time, too.
