Shopping Site Groupon Buys Germany's CityDeal

Groupon Inc., a website offering daily deals at businesses in the U.S. and Canada, is expanding into Europe by buying Berlin-based City Deal GmbH.

The deal, the terms of which weren’t disclosed, extends Chicago-based Groupon’s presence in a fast-growing e-commerce niche called social buying. Such services offer discounts to buyers that only become activated if a minimum number of customers agree to participate.

Groupon sends emails to users daily offering deals at local businesses.

Groupon charges the businesses for the service, an alternative to traditional advertising that helps attract customers.

About Voices

Along with original content and posts from across the Dow Jones network, this section of AllThingsD includes Must-Reads From Other Web Sites — pieces we’ve read, discussions we’ve followed, stuff we like. Six posts from external sites are included here each weekday, but we only run the headlines. We link to the original sites for the rest. These posts are explicitly labeled, so it’s clear that the content comes from other Web sites, and for clarity’s sake, all outside posts run against a pink background.

We also solicit original full-length posts and accept some unsolicited submissions.
