Full D8 Interview Video: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg

As promised, All Things Digital is posting the full videos from our eighth D: All Things Digital conference, held earlier this month.

On Monday, we posted the entire opening-night interview Walt Mossberg and I did with Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs.

Today, it’s Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s turn.

Without dwelling on it or making the obvious puns about being on the hot seat, the session did start out rocky for the young leader of the powerful social networking site, with some visible perspiring as we were asking questions about recent privacy controversies related to Facebook.

Let’s be clear–these are tough questions Zuckerberg needs to address, whatever the situation, especially given how powerful Facebook has become.

In any case, after Zuckerberg took off his trademark hoodie sweatshirt (and, yes, revealed an unusual insignia inside), he recovered well and took on a wide range of subjects, from Facebook’s management to his thoughts on the future of social on the Web.

As I said at the start of the interview, it was a gutsy thing for Zuckerberg to appear at D8 in the midst of Facebook’s thorny privacy debates. But you can watch and judge how well he answered his critics:

Note: We’ll be posting full D8 videos on Mondays and Thursdays. Next up: Hollywood director James Cameron.

Hmmm…from watching video we're not sure Mr Zuckerberg really understands what it is he is building – which is of some concern. Also, the lack of enthusiasm in his responses. Most of the time he looks like a rabbit in the headlights of an oncoming car. At just 26 years of age, with neither little real world experience behind him nor countless failures in which to learn from, the world has adopted his system without knowing to what end they are headed. We think it's time the debate got a little more intense as was Mr Mossberg's valid attempt at prying open the darker recesses of what to us appears a rather troubled and concerned young mind.

I’m not really concerened with the deep recesses of his mind. If I don’t like Facebook crawling the text of my emails and chats to feed their advertisers I’ll stop using FB; I think the bottom line is Mark can build products like nobodies business.

Zuckerberg has no idea what Facebook is anymore he’s just built a useful and scalable platform for a “community” of 500 million people.
