The deal was tipped late last month, and now Facebook has confirmed the purchase of Hot Potato, a social check-in and chat service focused on activities and real-time events rather than specific locations. Hot Potato itself will shut down, but its technology and small team are likely to find a role in Facebook’s newly launched Places location service.
