Facebook Needs a Fail Whale [UPDATED]

No word on the cause yet, but Facebook is down after suffering technical issues for the better part of the morning. Users attempting to access the site are encountering DNS Failure messages.

“We’re currently experiencing some site issues causing Facebook to be slow or unavailable for some users,” the company said in a statement. “We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.”

This is Facebook’s second outage in as many days, though the company says the cause of today’s failure is unrelated to the problems the site suffered Wednesday.

UPDATE: Facebook’s back up and running again. “Today we experienced technical difficulties causing the site to be unavailable for a number of people,” the company said in another statement. “The issue has been resolved and everyone should now have access to Facebook. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Just as the atom bomb was the weapon that was supposed to render war obsolete, the Internet seems like capitalism’s ultimate feat of self-destructive genius, an economic doomsday device rendering it impossible for anyone to ever make a profit off anything again. It’s especially hopeless for those whose work is easily digitized and accessed free of charge.
