In Less Than One Month, CityVille Beats FarmVille to Become Zynga's Biggest Game

Looks like I’m far from the only one addicted to CityVille. The newest Zynga game has accomplished what no game maker, not even Zynga itself, has done in recent memory: Beat FarmVille’s number of active users.

CityVille now has 61 million active users, compared to 56 million for FarmVille, according to AppData. Having only launched at the beginning of this month, it’s gotten huge faster than any game in history.

CityVille added 6.9 million users on Thursday alone. I had previously noted the game gained 10 million users between Sunday night (when I first drafted a story about my addiction to it) and Wednesday morning (when we published that story). Those numbers are unheard of.

(By the way, I’m now at level 29, up from 26 at the time of writing, though I’ve had a busy week.)

Of course, these social games all experience dropoff, and it’s unclear where CityVille’s numbers will eventually settle. FarmVille’s all-time high number of monthly active users was more than 83 million.

Zynga hasn’t hit it out of the park every time with its previous FarmVille follow-ups. The company’s most recent launch, FrontierVille, which like CityVille was notable for its amped-up social features and was considered quite successful, is currently at 30 million monthly active users.

    Amazing.

How much of Cityville’s gains were due to Farmville’s losses? And the losses of Zynga’s other titles?

That is, did Zynga’s aggregate, or overall, audience increase due to Cityville? Or did a bunch of people simply switch from one Zynga title to another?

Zynga relentlessly promotes its new titles to its existing users…

FarmVille’s traffic is incredibly steady. http://appdata.com/apps/facebo.....-farmville

Looks like no change except for maybe a small uptick since CityVille came out.

Zynga is private as is Facebook, but does either release any data that might hint at revenue from CityVille, FarmVille, or any other games. Even if only 3% of players buy virtual goods, that’s close to 2 million paying customers for CityVille. Any guess if 3% is too low and what each paying player may be spending per month?
