IPad 2 Display Question Draws Closer to Resolution

If you were hoping that Apple, through some combination of engineering acumen, force of will and luck, would overcome the power consumption and cost issues preventing it from adding a high-resolution retina display to the iPad 2, it may be time to relinquish the dream. Because a new set of specs cited by Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst for Concord Securities in Taiwan, suggests the device will feature the same 1024×768 resolution display as its predecessor.

“The improvement of iPad 2′s display focuses on thickness and anti-reflection, not resolution,” Ming-Chi claims, adding that the device’s display module is 30 to 35 percent thinner than that of the iPad 1 and will eliminate some of the glare that some critics claim makes it difficult to read in bright sunlight.

I think Apple will have to bring a lot more to the table if they stand a chance of battling the Honeycomb onslaught.

Well I think reliability and consistency are “a lot more” than most people think.

Android better bring it’s A+ game as well. Apple has such a lead now in terms of momentum, they may be really difficult to catch. That said, it does help that Google give the OS away for free. But the real acid test is how many developers flock to the platform.

Very true. The closed system works very well for them in that respect.

The issue is that developers have to make money to feed their families. Open source can only take you so far. A friend who has a very high earning iPhone app is only bringing in 1% of that money on the Android platform. People aren’t spending money to buy apps on Android and want everything for free there.

Honeycomb is not even sitting at the table yet. And Android is for low-end only. It doesn’t compete with Apple.

It makes sense for this to be “iPad 3GS”: same display, double the speed. Then next year they can do “iPad 4″: same speed, double the display.

The current iPad display is gorgeous. The priority is to give developers more power to exploit, so that the full-size apps can get even more full-size.

People don’t just want the apps for free, they also want the phones for free. That is why the handset makers are not making money. All the Android handsets together bring in only about 5% of the profits that Apple makes all by itself off iOS. Last year Samsung embraced Android and dramatically improved their smartphone market share, but their profit actually went down.

Your link is irrelevant, it’s for phones. JohnDoey is talking Honeycomb, the android for tablets/pads that’s not even shipping yet.

Well, I think the phone market is just a reflection of what’s going to happen in the tablet market.

and… Honeycomb has recently been shown to support phones.

I think going public today is almost like a Bataan death march. I think Wall Street — this will insult many people — but I think in many ways it bears a resemblance to organized crime. It is legal today what they do, but what they do is manifestly unfair.
