51 Percent of CIOs Planning Tablet Deployments in 2011

Company-subsidized tablets may outnumber their employee-owned counterparts sooner than expected.

Morgan Stanley recently surveyed 50 enterprise CIOs about current and future tablet deployments and came back with some pretty astonishing findings: 21 percent of them are already purchasing tablets for employees and 51 percent expect to begin doing so in the coming year. In total, 67 percent of the CIOs surveyed said they’re either planning to deploy tablets or provide support for employee-owned ones this year. Now the scope of these deployments remains to be seen, but the fact that so many are being budgeted suggests the tablet is gaining meaningful traction in enterprise.

And if you’re dubious of that claim, consider this: Pads accounted for 29 percent of new enterprise activations of Good Technology software in December 2010, up from 25 percent the month prior. Clearly, there’s growing corporate interest in the tablet, which means there are growing opportunities for companies that provide enterprise software solutions for it–mobile security vendors like Check Point, desktop virtualization companies like VMware and cloud-based applications outfits like Salesforce.com.

    I’m not surprised at all. Most corporate PC’s are running XP circa 2001. With iPad they jump 10 years into the future with very cheap deployments and almost no training.

    Also, some users have a desktop, a notebook, and a phone. You can move them to a notebook, an iPad, and a phone and it is much cheaper and also more flexible.

    I have seen a couple of MCSE heads explode, though. Some I-T staff will need grief counseling.

    It’s not surprising that more CIOs are beginning to issue tablets to employees, but simply issuing these devices is not enough. Companies need to be creating a comprehensive mobile strategy to reach their internal audiences. The continued expansion of tablets in the workplace provides enterprises with an invaluable tool to efficiently and effectively communicate and share important data with employees. Companies can use an internal application in a variety of ways to overcome obstacles associated with employee mobility. Many companies have seen how effective mobile can be in helping them interact with external audiences, and as tablets and smartphones become standard-issue, it’s important that more companies address its potential to reach internal audiences.

    Being in a company thats deploying of tablets – it isnt DEPLOYMENT… it’s “ALLOWANCE”.
    Do dont think that they are replacing computers, they arent.

    They are simply getting them for some very few, and then telling them (showing them) how to citrix into the corporate network. That’s all.

    Remember its more or less a toy, not a computer to get actual work done one.
