Analyst: IPad 2 Will Launch in June, Not April [Updated]

UPDATE: Sources familiar with the matter tell me that Yuanta’s report is incorrect.

If you’d been expecting the as-of-yet-unannounced iPad 2 to debut in April, Taiwanese brokerage Yuanta Securities has some disappointing news for you. Production bottlenecks at Apple’s manufacturing partner Hon Hai may delay the rumored device’s launch by as much as two months. Which means the iPad 2 might not arrive at market until June–if you buy Yuanta’s report.

“Our checks suggest new issues are being encountered with the new production and it is taking time to resolve them,” Yuanta said in a note to clients today. “As a number of Android 3.0 tablets are being launched in April and May, the delay in iPad 2 shipments may give the Android camp a brief window of opportunity.”

It would also reduce Apple’s total iPad shipments for the year quite a bit. Yuanta figures 23 million units, a significant reduction from its original forecast of 30.6 million units, which assumed an April launch.

That said, it’s worth noting that Yaunta’s note contradicts earlier reports that claim the iPad 2 is already in production for a March release. And it’s further belied by what I’ve been hearing from sources close to the company lately: that Apple will soon announce an event at which it plans to show off the next-gen device. Other well-sourced Apple reporters have been hearing the same thing.
