4.5 Million Tablets Were Sold in Q3 2010; 4.2 Million Were iPads

Lest there be any doubt that 2010 was the year of the iPad, here’s one more data point to attest to its supremacy in the nascent tablet market. Of the 4.5 million “media tablets” shipped in the third quarter of 2010, a staggering 4.2 million were iPads, according to ABI Research.

Now admittedly this number is a bit dusty and more indicative of Apple’s first-mover advantage than anything. Still, it’s worth noting in advance of the unveiling of iPad 2 next week, which will undoubtedly renew at least a portion of that advantage even as new rivals like the Motorola XOOM, HP Touchpad and BlackBerry Playbook crowd into the market. As Apple quipped in the invitation to its iPad event next week: “Come see what 2011 will be the year of.”

I doubt anyone even sold 200,000 “other” tablets… those “others” are always guesses because the “other” manufactures are too embarrassed to release numbers…

same for the 4th quarter, and most likely this 1st quarter too.

iPad has no competition. Even the die hard windows users want them! Why buy anything else when it’s an obvious also-ran with no software, no ecosystem, no support, tiny screen (1/4 the pixel count!) and the ‘clones’ are MORE expensive??

I’m surprise they sold as many knock-offs as they did.

So where does Samsung’s 2 GalTab million number fit in?

  • Anonymous

That would be the 200,000. The 2 million were sold to Samsung’s dealers not to end users.

In other words. Samsung were lying.

The Galaxy Tab only actually sold 200k units to consumers, 2 million is the total inventory (last time I saw an article about it).

Android is really bringing it with their new Honeycomb and amazing tech spec tablet army.

IF the claim Apple is making that 2011 is the year of the iPad YET AGAIN, it is important to note that they will bring something special to the market that is not necessarily the fastest processor or the best hi-res screen ever.

I will put my money that INTEL’S THUNDERBOLT will be what sets the iPAD apart from other tablets at least for the first half of the year.

I think this is just one of the many new features of the new iPad

    Time to short AAPL.
Their market share is only 93%¡

    93%? Natural monopoly?
Inevitable is the The European Commission going all after Apple for business practices, such as bundling an internet browser with the iPad and restrictions of the App Store

You said it! Hence the anti-trust inquiries

    How do you charge it?
