EBay Drops the Price to Free for Up to 50 Auction Listings

EBay said Tuesday that for the first time ever, it is making it free to list up to 50 items a month on its auction site and that it will be free to add the “Buy it Now” option. Prices will be effective starting April 19. The promotions are designed to drive increases in both new listers and listings. Currently the prices for the service vary by the starting price of the item. If someone were listing 50 items a month at the highest price and added Buy It Now to all of them, the current cost would be $112.

eBay will charge sellers 9% of the shipping cost.

    Examplle
Before – $4.95 Priority shipping – no fees
    Soon – $4.95 Priority shipping – $0.45 fee

The $0.25 auction goes to free, but selling fee increases +$0.45.

    What a deal.

    For eBay.

How does this effect sales that currently have free shipping?

Seems like eBay is discouraging the common practice of offering a low sale price and then charging a bundle for shipping and handling. As a buyer that is a good thing. I hate those tricks almost as much as I hated being blackmailed by some seller to leave positive feedback. eBay finally banned that abuse, and now they are discouraging another one.

Ah sorry i need to be clear. I do work at PayPal (part of eBay) but my comment is my own and in no way represents either of those companies.

I think going public today is almost like a Bataan death march. I think Wall Street — this will insult many people — but I think in many ways it bears a resemblance to organized crime. It is legal today what they do, but what they do is manifestly unfair.
