QOTD: Obama: "I Do Have an iPad"

“I’m the president of the United States. You think I’ve got to go borrow somebody’s computer? ‘Hey, man, can I borrow your computer? How about you? You’ve got one?’”

– BlackBerry fan Barack Obama, explaining to a Univision-hosted Town Hall meeting that he also owns other devices, including Apple’s tablet.

Imagine if the US Presidential limo is a Rolls Royce…

…Or the British Royal limo is a Toyota….

As much as I love my iPhone, I can understand why President Obama carries a Blackberry. I don’t want him distracted by Angry Birds. :)

Still I am glad to hear that he uses an iPad. I like having a president who is in touch with what’s happening in technology. I equally applauded President Bush for making an effort (more difficult for him, being older) to become more technologically aware (and iPod-friendly) during his time in office.

What does being the President of the United States have to do with a Economic status symbol? So while the country has the highest unemployment rate since Any President of the United States, he is spending frivolously taking his family to vacations on our dime, and buying products that could feed a family for a week? I think the President has let being President go to his head!

When the President goes on vacation, it is a massive boost to the local economy of whichever town he chooses to visit. You will notice that, unlike his predecessor, this President does not retire to a private ranch with no spillover benefits to a local economy. You will also notice that he rotates his locales, despite only having ties to Hawaii and Chicago.

Further, because the President is “on vacation” doesn’t mean he isn’t working. This notion that he has to be at the White House, in the Oval Office to get anything done is ludicrous. He’s the President of the United States. You think he doesn’t have a.) stellar global communications facilities on hand, no matter where he is; b.) daily briefings and contact with advisers, directing the affairs of the nation; c.) a staff who know that some things are important enough to interrupt whatever “leisure” activity the President may be involved in at the moment?

This is a late-night joke of a criticism, a play for easy laughs from lazy “comedians” catering to lowest common denominator Americans. It was ridiculous when applied to Bush, and it’s ridiculous applied to Obama.

And since when is an iPad an economic status symbol? Would you have preferred if he’d bought a Xoom instead?

Someone clearly either slept through history class or is a dropout. Under Republican president Herbert Hoover unemployment rose from 4.4% to 23.6%

Values aren’t just for idealists — they matter. If a company’s practices make you uncomfortable, pay attention to your instincts and be true to them.
