Here Come the Apps: Google's In-App Billing for Android Goes Live

Just as we said it would, Google turned on in-app billing late today to developers and users in the Android Market.

By doing so, now developers will be allowed to monetize their creations by selling additional content, such as chapters, episodes, levels or virtual goods from inside applications.

It will also make Android more competitive with Apple and iOS.

Previously, the only other way to monetize on Android was to sell an application, or to embed advertising.

With this announcement, we previously wrote that there would be a flood of applications coming to Android.

Sure enough.

Several apps are launching today using the service, including Tap Tap Revenge by Disney Mobile; Comics by ComiXology; Gun Bros, Deer Hunter Challenge HD, and WSOP3 by Glu Mobile; and Dungeon Defenders: FW Deluxe by Trendy Entertainment.

In a Google blog post, Google’s Eric Chu wrote “In-app Billing gives you more ways to monetize your apps with try-and-buy, virtual goods, upgrades, and other billing models.”
