How to Get Verified on Twitter

Twitter turned off its verification program last summer, and since then it has blessed only a handful of Very Important Person’s accounts with its “verified” badge.

But! Where there’s a will, there’s a way. At least, if you work for Twitter fan Howard Stern, who had Biz Stone on his show this morning.

Stern and his crew seem obsessed with verification, and at the end of a 45-minute interview, Stern convinced Stone to bless one of his pals, too.

Ronnie the Limo Driver will get his badge today, Stone said. As of 4:30 ET, that hasn’t happened, but then again the Twitter team has a lot on its plate right now.

If you do have the time to spare, by the way, the Stern interview is quite good: Stone goes over the basics of Twitter’s history, as well as delivering a good anecdote about not selling the company to Facebook.

But unlike the other press appearances Stone has made, this one goes away from the standard talking points, and Stern gets him to go into his personal history, too. It’s both gossipy and humanizing–the kind of stuff that people love to hear from famous people, but very seldom get.

The obsession with verified twitter accounts shows that Twitter users highly value their twitter identities and twitter reputation. It would be great if Twitter could find a way to open up their service to allow 3rd parties to assert reputation data about users, and have it appear on their Twitter profile. This would be a lot more scalable than having Twitter manually verify users.

I don’t really know why it would be necessary for a verified account process, if you’re identity isn’t of any interest to anyone. The only people who would need it are people who have various accounts posing as them.

And you gave a warning to the TechTips article for being not helpful? This article doesn’t give the reader anything but a misleading title and an annoying story. Peter Kafka (warning: not helpful)
