Gloom, Doom Loom for Motorola Xoom?

When it debuted in February, Motorola’s Xoom was widely described as the first comparable competitor to Apple’s iPad. And while it may be that, it’s not proving much of a rival in the market.

Deutsche Bank estimates Motorola Mobility has sold just 100,000 Xoom tablets to date. And while that’s in line with its estimates of 50,000 units in the company’s first quarter and 150,000 in its second, it’s a hell of a long way off from what the iPad’s doing these days, and nowhere close to the sales numbers it posted when it first launched. Apple is believed to have sold 300,000 iPads on its first day at market.

Over at RBC Capital Markets, analyst Mark Sue describes Xoom sales as “slow”–so slow, in fact, that he lopped 25 percent off his current quarter forecast, dropping it to 300,000 units.

And at Pacific Crest, James Faucette says sales of the Xoom are “well below forecast.” Seems the debut of the iPad 2 immediately after the Xoom’s official launch knocked the legs out from under the device. Said Faucette, “Based on our checks, we believe overall sell-through trends for the Xoom…have been disappointing.”

These new reports underscore earlier concerns that Xoom was having trouble gaining traction in the market. Back in March, Jeffries cut its price target on Motorola Mobility largely because of the Xoom. “Xoom sales have been underwhelming,” it said. “While marketing has just started, we believe MMI will likely have to cut production if it already has not done so.”

Looks like Xoom may end up being the new Zune. That said, as Charles Arthur notes over at The Guardian, at least the Xoom is actually selling.

    The commercial is pretty amazing…
Read the fine print: “Screen simulated”
Might as well say, “Here’s the new Xoom! Showing you stuff it CAN’T do!”

As soon as a good, pure Porsche (maybe Ferrari) 550 HP, AWD model hits the market at $25,000ish I will buy. Until then? I will stick with my F150.

You Apple Haters have lost what was your only leg to stand on when it came to PCs… price. Apple is not the premium cost device in the post-PC market. Apple’s iPad is not only better, but it is cheaper. Moto had to cut the price at the last minute to even have a CHANCE of selling the Xume. So did Samsung with their “iPad killer.” And THEY had to redesign before they even came to market. They try to grab the “high ground” with a mock up, claiming tis non-electronic thing is thinner… and they got THAT wrong.

And Advertising… WTF? Moto is showing simulated screens of what is not possible on their device. Samsung is scripting actors and trying to pass them off as the satisfied Samsung random public.

NOBODY could make an iPod Killer… Ever. What chance do they have of making an iPad Killer? Xero.

The answer to the first question is however many they can make before they give up. If Apple quit development of the iPad, then someone might compete eventually. Assuming they could build a truly comparable OS. But the target is moving faster than the pursuit. Apple has a faster car. They have a head start. They making their car faster still more quickly… Who’s truly going to be able to catch up?

The answer to the second question is “every one.”

This article is about as hypocritical and biased as I’ve ever seen. He even writes that the 100,000 sold (actually owned by a consumer) is ahead of what Motorola projected. And it’s their first real competition for the iPad. So why would you expect it to ‘takeover’ the iPad right away? This is classic cult following saying something has failed even though in reality it’s made an inroad ahead of schedule into market that really had only one player before . . the guardian article mentioned at th end is MUCH more objective without knocking the competition.

First of all I believe the #’s are way off as even before the wifi version was released I called on opening day & all 4 local Best Buys were sold out & 3 out of 4 Verizon stores. How we have the more popular wifi model that’s available at many more stores & has been steadily in the #1 spot for similiar devices on Amazon.
I have also read some unbiased articles that confirm my results, one such stated that in calling to around 130 Best Buys over 75% were sold out & again before the wifi model.
Also, any unbiased article confirms faster speeds, much greater resolution, much better cameras, micro sd card slot so basically unlimited memorey rather than having to buy a whole diff. device for more memory, HDMI output, USB, multi-tasking, & on & on. It is Apple that’s taking advantage of the customers & treating them like unintelligent sheep.
Thanks to the great success of the Droid, Droid X, Droid 2 many people have realized the superior experience that Android provides.
Finally, it is rediculous to act as if a single android tablet is failing by not outselling the ipad, just look at what’s happening w/ the phones where it’s taking a little while but now android is outselling the iphone, but of course not one specific android phone.

I bought a Xoom for my wife’s birthday gift and loved it so much, I bought one for myself a few days later.

ipad2 could only be purchased by mindless apple zombies. No Widescreen, No Flash, No Java, No SD, No USB… I don’t even think it has bluetooth… Poor multi-tasking. The Xoom is superior to ipad in every way. Best of all, you don’t need the itunes virus.

Twitter’s still in its honeymoon period, but that won’t last forever. At some point, it’s going to be less of a wunderkammer, and more of a regrettable necessity.

— Reuters finance blogger Felix Salmon, in an article entitled “Why Twitter will get more annoying”
