Yes, Apple Did Buy the iCloud.com Domain

grandpasimpsoncloudApple has indeed acquired the domain name iCloud.com from Sweden-based hybrid cloud computing outfit Xcerion. Sources in position to know confirm that Apple bought the domain as GigaOm first reported Thursday, though they declined to say whether its rumored $4.5 million price tag was accurate.

Just what Apple plans to do with the domain is unclear. Presumably, it will have something to do with whatever cloud-based services the company is rumored to be ramping up in its 505,000-square-foot North Carolina data center.

This is kind of weak as an Apple brand name. Apple isn’t usually big on promoting the technology ahead of the utility. In a few years, a brand like “iCloud” will sound as quaint as a company touting that it’s got a website.

Should be interesting to see what they develop with that, Cant help but wonder. http://www.real-privacy.eu.tc

    iWeb and iDVD are similar.

And so far their cloud has been named iTools and MobileMe and although there is a lot to recommend in those services, they haven’t set the world on fire. Even non-technical people tend to understand the cloud concept, it’s communicative.

But they may not be buying it to use it. They may just want to keep someone else from using it in a way that would confuse consumers. Like they did with iSlate.
