Web Commenting Platform Disqus Raises $10 Million

Disqus, a startup that operates a commenting platform for 750,000 Web sites, including this one, has raised a $10 million funding round led by North Bridge and Union Square Ventures. The start-up, hatched at Y Combinator in 2007, had previously raised $4.5 million from USV and others. It faces competition from Facebook, which just launched its own commenting system; Twitter may also offer a competitive product.

I hope Disqus gets very aggressive. Sure, there are benefits (less account maintenance) for using Twitter or Facebook, but I like Disqus’ system far better. It’s integration with WordPress is sweet.

Disqus is the best system in my opinion. I don’t understand why they need $10 mil financing? The product looks pretty polished to me, can’t imagine what more they have in their minds.
Also I have no clue as to how they can make money. Perhaps they will start charging people to use the service?

I like Disqus. It allows me to write and follow-up on my comments across multiple blogs, and to do so without using my real name.

How does it make money? Does it sell data based on the commenting patterns of its users to advertisers?

I think going public today is almost like a Bataan death march. I think Wall Street — this will insult many people — but I think in many ways it bears a resemblance to organized crime. It is legal today what they do, but what they do is manifestly unfair.
