Galaxy S II Rockets Off the Launch Pad With Three Million Pre-Orders

Sales of Samsung’s new Galaxy S II smartphone have gotten off to a heck of a start.

The handset manufacturer said today that by April’s end it had received three million pre-orders globally for the dual-core Android device, making it Samsung’s best-selling smartphone so far this year. Remember, the company sold 120,000 S IIs in the first few days it was available for purchase.

“There is surging demand for the device from several countries,” a Samsung spokesman said. “We will do our best to meet the global demand.”

An impressive achievement, particularly since the S II isn’t yet available for pre-order in a number of countries, including the United States. Seems Samsung is well on its way to meeting its sales goal for the device. “The Galaxy S was forecast to surpass 10 million sales last year,” Shin Jong-kyun, president of Samsung’s mobile business, said in late April. “The Galaxy S II will also top 10 million sales.”

Are these pre-orders from actual customers or just channel sales? I’m never clear on that with these self serving PR pieces.

Of course preorders by retail partners. I wouldn’t even know where to go as a consumer. Samsung doesn’t have a web store. You can only buy their wares through 3rd party retailers.

In just five days as 200.000 units in the three largest wireless providers in South korea were booked in advance. It is a
a notable success for Samsung. As a communicator for project Advanced Technology and Design Korea, I shared this with the project’s audience through facebook, twitter and Blog (
