Blogger Goes Down, Taking 30 Hours of Posts and Comments With It

Google’s Blogger service has been offline or unreliable for much of the day, with Blogger-hosted blogs changed to read-only mode, and posts and comments made after 7:37 am PT on May 11, 2011, removed.

In a post on the Blogger help forum, the product team said that it had rolled back a scheduled maintenance release from last night and that its “engineers are working hard to return Blogger to normal and restore your posts and comments.”

Google’s reply for a request for comment was, “The team is working on this.” The company has posted some short updates to the Blogger Twitter account and Status blog, but hasn’t yet explained what’s happening, how widespread it is, and what will happen to users’ content.

Blogger had started rolling out its first major redesign in years in April. The team said in a tweet that the outage was not related to launching the new design.

Update: At 6 am Friday Google said Blogger would be “back to normal soon.”

They aren’t giving specifics…just the vague “soon”.

I don’t understand “tech” a lot, but this just seems odd for a company the size of Google…

Besides this fiasco, I am also upset about the Google buckling under pressure by the Italian courts to shut down a blogger critical of the handling of the Amanda Knox case. http://goo.gl/EUJAh

I already have a WordPress account, but don’t like some of the things about WordPress’ current setup.

Blogging on blogger is just a hobby for me. My life is not in it and I don’t depend on Blogger for anything but amusement. I think it’s sad that folks get all crazy about a FREE service! I’ve been on Blogger for 3 and a half years and this is the first major upset. Get over yourselves, people, it’s just Blogger.

I wouldn’t be upset if I were a “hobby” blogger, but some us rely on the income generated by our blogs. And this *isn’t* the only recent outage (although it seems to be the worst). And as usual, Google customer service is virtually non-existent.

we cant even export to wordpress because we cant access our dahboards, this is yerrible I have over 1,000 pageviews ad ay becuase of my daily content being updated, i can only imagine how many readers ia m losing not to mention the fact that a blogger header is appearing at the end of every post making the blog look terrible

This is one long outage.  I few hours is bad but this is really pushing the patience of —- I don’t know how many people.
At least DISQUS is still running.  I wonder if there will be some ripple effect on them.

I know some that have switched and they must be feeling good about switching.  Do you know if anyone runs their blog on both services?  I think it would be a hassle.

Man,  i hope adsense is still working?  did ya check it??

  • http://freewaredaves.com David Burton

AdSense ads are appearing, and I would assume (since they work separately from the Blogger platform) that they’re registering clicks and/or impressions as they should. Blogger’s still down, though – I just tried to log-in.

Its back, working right  now.,. got a lot of work to do !!  good luck all :) :)

This is completely unacceptable for people who use blogger as a way of making business. Yet, we should also consider the fact that Google is redesigning Blogger and making some necessary changes to it in order to maintain and further enhance the service that will benefit the users and not to put anyone in a very bad position. And I think it’s going to be resolved anytime soon. So relax, my fellow bloggers!
