Ballmer Unveils Online Version of Office Software

Microsoft Corp. unveiled an online version of its Office software Tuesday, taking aim at rival products from Google Inc. and others as it looks to sate customers’ appetite for Web-based software.

The launch of Office 365 takes the Redmond, Wash., company further into cloud computing, the delivery of software and computing power as a service over the Internet. Proponents of that approach have argued that it can reduce technology costs and free staff to focus on company-specific projects rather than chores such as upgrading software or dealing with servers.
