Apple Passes RIM In U.S. Smartphone Market Share (Again)
comScore served up its latest batch of smartphone market metrics today, and they show pretty much what you’d expect: More gains for Google and Apple and continuing losses for pretty much everyone else.
For the three-month period ending May 2011, Google’s Android ranked as the top smartphone OS in the United States. Thanks to an increase of 5.1 percentage points, it now claims 38.1 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers.
Apple also saw an increase in market share during the period, though not as large as Google’s. It gained 1.4 percentage points for a total U.S. market share of 26.6 percent. But that was enough to give it the second place ranking formerly held by Research In Motion, which lost 4.2 percentage points during the period, falling to 24.7 percent from 28.9 percent.
Microsoft and Palm also suffered losses as well. Microsoft’s share of the U.S. market slipped 1.9 percentage points to 5.8 percent; Palm’s slid .4 percentage points to 2.4 percent.
UPDATE: This is in fact the second consecutive month that Apple has surpassed RIM in a rolling three-month average (Thanks Eric http://www.macrumors.com/).
