Spotify May Have 70,000 Paid Subscribers a Week After U.S. Launch

All that publicity — and all those free invitations — looks to have worked for Spotify: Billboard editor Bill Werde says his sources estimate that the music service has 70,000 paid subscribers just a week after launch. For context: The service says it has 1.6 million paid subscribers after two years of operation in Europe. If American users follow the European pattern, they will have overwhelmingly signed on for the service’s $10-a-month option.

While it’s tempting to see the Huffington Post’s Pulitzer as a “big win for new media,” or something like that, the real story is that these organizations — the Huffington Post, the New York Times, the Washington Post — are becoming more like each other. Old media and new media are increasingly antiquated terms.
