Analyst Suggests Apple CEO Cook Consider Acquisitions, Expand iPhone, iPad Lineup

I’m not sure if Tim Cook is actually looking for advice, but one analyst has offered up a laundry list of suggestions for Apple’s newly named chief executive.

In an open letter, MobileTrax analyst Gerry Purdy congratulates Cook before launching into a list of things he says could help Apple remain “insanely great” for years to come.

Among his recommendations are that Apple consider using its considerable cash hoard to buy TiVo or other companies, as well as expand its lineup of iPhones and iPads to include more than a single size of each product. Buying TiVo, Purdy said, could form the basis for a broader attack on the living room.

“Apple is already great,” Purdy writes in the letter. “Your challenge is to keep the fine-tuned engine humming while you take on some new initiatives that will begin to document the Tim Cook era in the life of Apple.”

Purdy also suggests that Apple consider expanding its forthcoming iCloud service to work with non-Apple mobile devices in addition to the company’s own products.

“I recommend you extend iCloud to sync with any popular mobile device, so that iCloud can truly transform mobile computing while allowing users to own any smartphone or tablet mobile device they want in order to benefit from iCloud’s services,” he writes.

An Apple representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Purdy’s letter.
