Tuesday, Oct. 4.
That’s the day Apple is currently expected to hold its next big media event, according to sources close to the situation, where the tech giant will unveil the next iteration of its popular iPhone.
While there have been a lot of conflicting reports about the exact timing of the event, including some that pegged it as taking place this month, AllThingsD had previously posted that the rollout of the iPhone 5 would be in October.
While Apple could certainly change its plans anytime, sources said that the Oct. 4 date has been selected by the company to showcase the iPhone 5. Sources added that the plan is now to make the new device available for purchase within a few weeks after the announcement.
And while the iPhone 5 is a much-anticipated handset, the event itself has a lot more importance for Apple than many previous ones.
That’s because it will be newly installed CEO Tim Cook’s first big product introduction, and the place where the public will get a first lengthy impression of him that may well set the tone for Cook’s new role.
And that’s why, said sources, although he’s never quarterbacked an Apple product announcement before, Cook is certain to preside over the iPhone 5 rollout.
He has to, of course. To pass the presentation on to anyone else — even one of Apple’s key executives, such as Phil Schiller, who has handled the Macworld and Worldwide Developers Conference keynotes in 2009 — would undercut Cook’s new role and reinforce public perception that its legendary outgoing CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs is Apple, and that it will be a different company without him.
So, like his predecessor, and as Jobs’s right-hand man and chosen successor, Cook is expected to be the main presenter at all big Apple media events going forward.
That said, according to sources, he’s sure to have help from Apple lieutenants, such as marketing head Schiller, iOS chief Scott Forstall and Eddy Cue, recently named SVP of Internet Software and Services.
Still, the pressure will be on Cook to turn in a good performance at the event, especially after what has so far been a very smooth leadership transition at Apple.
What will be interesting to see, of course, is if Jobs himself will also make an appearance, which is something that is likely to be determined by his health, in a decision that will be made very close to the event.
And while putting Jobs onstage with Cook could diminish the new leader’s first public effort, what better “one more thing” than Jobs himself making a cameo appearance?
I guess Apple is abolishing product cycles now.. First the iPhone, now the iPod
apple iphone 5 will rock the world...
Is there a live feed of the October 4 address?
i have a great idea , starting this moment lets have apple give away 20 new i phone 5 ;s to the next 20 commenters, all in white. don't you just love my justo. i can;t wait to have one. i think the i phone is the mnost beautiful thing that i was just picking a phone , not knowing what an i phone was and feel in love with it.
I'm not so exited about iPhone 5, it will probably be a minor upgrade of the 4.
Can't wait to see iphone 6 in 2012 though, that will be the huge innovator I think.
How long after the October 4th launch date will one be able to buy it through a wireless service?
Finally some news, better late than never.
I'm less interested in the spec and more in the battery life, fed up of carrying a charger around. We really need some innovation within the battery dept.
Oh and guess my invite got lost in the mail again...
I am counting days till I hold it in my hands and then compare it with Samsung Galaxy SII.
Design still same!!
There is still same design!!
and the source is...
*yawn*
More conjecture, more speculation, more guessing.
Seriously, people, until you have facts, stop reporting them as such.
Rumors, rumors, rumors, rumors, rumors. Buncha gossips
lol seems like oct 4 is a big day. I was browsing att's pages and found this
AT&T Mobile Insurance

Gone miss Steve Jobs alot :(
What about specs? Core count, screen resolution, graphics power etc?
well, the iPhone in his hand is obviously photoshopped. SO, WTF is up with that?!
all I want is the iphone 5, this 3gs is killing me, IM not getting an Iphone 4, only to have the new one come out a month later, this delays are really testing my patience.
Cook should do something original like wear a Star Trek uniform and Vulcan ears. Or has someone else done that?
We will wait and see what they have
It looks just like the iphone 4 but with a big 5 on it?!
期待多时的终于等到了!!不知道是真是假!!
If I could be grotesquely geeky for a moment: I'm hoping not to see Steve Jobs at the event (whenever it does happen) for the same reason I don't want to see David Tennant in "Doctor Who". The CEO has regenerated, and baton passed. Now it's time to get acquainted with the new man in charge who, by virtue of Apple culture, will be an extraordinary personality, with a few echoes of the previous "incarnation". But also a unique individual who can stand on his own.
It's super interesting nobody ever thought of asking this question but do you think that Cook is waiting for Steve jobs to feel better to help him make the presentation better? I mean new stuff from apple always launches in September right? I really think it depends on Jobs health, if he doesn't feel better then you might not see and iphone 5 but you would probably see and iphone 4 with better camera pixels and a keyboard maybe?

It's sad, really. Look at us so anticipated for the next gadget to be announced. I bet most people giving comments believe we came so far from being cave men. I know this has nothing to do with the article but just look at yourselves. It's like cows getting excited for a high tech salt lick, that's way better than the one the farmer gave them last year around july. Like he did the year before. This year he made us wait longer because he really couldn't do much to improve the salt lick so he decided a longer wait and build up and no matter what he does with the salt lick the cows will be mystified and love it. When I truly discovered Einstein's theory of relativity I realized how many people today do not. You can have all the education and technology in the world but if you are drowning in a dessert of hype you'll never get to see the water fountain from which we can not drink.
What could be better than for Steve's last "One more thing…" surprise to be himself.
Cook in a gray turtleneck, True Religion jeans, and Adidas shell tops?
why Iphone, if we would can have tables.

Apple products - it's all about the roll out "performance"...
Apple products are ALL about their performance.
That is what made the iPhone such a success, that is what makes iPad sell more units in it's first 3 months on the market than all other tablets sold for the past 10 years, and that is what has been selling an ever increasing market share of iMacs and MacBooks for the last 8 consecutive quarters (this is at the same time that all other PC sales have slumped and are decreasing each quarter).
Apple products perform, and consumers recognise what works for them, and what works for them really well.
Even HP has made a public recognition of how HP are no longer able to compete against Apple (remember, Apple sells hardware, Apple competes against HP, Dell, Acer, etc.)
From the Wall Street Journal on HP's conference call :
http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/20...
“The tablet effect is real, and sales of the TouchPad are not meeting our expectations,” Apotheker says, explaining the movement of consumers from PCs to tablets as one of the problems with the PC division. So H-P is exploring options for its unit that “may include separation through spinoff or other transactions.”
By the "tablet effect", HP actually mean the "iPad effect" (since iPad currently has over 90% of the tablet market).
There will be no iphone5 i think... just an iphone 4S with a dualcore cpu, more RAM and perhaps a little bit better camera.. but that's all...
i think the iphone5 will be brought to us in spring 2012 together with a new ipad3...
Ok. I am now officially excited. Finally!!! My Iphone 3G [Yes, 3G], is ready to take a major dump.
the worst thing they could do would be to prop Jobs up on stage as a cameo appearance, as sickly as he is... let the man rest, and not be a circus showpiece for the press.
If Jobs does appear, you can bet it won't be because he was dragged into it unwillingly. If Steve wants to be there, and he is feeling healthy enough to make an appearance, being a "prop" is not going to be his mission.
His mission is what it always was, he wanted to make a contribution, and he wanted to make a difference.
If Steve shows up, trust me, he will only be there because he wants to be there.
lol at everyone..its like watching cattle.. Big Corporation controlling the masses...Moooo
Putting steve on the stage for one last time would not diminish tim's first public effort at all IMO.
What's really interesting about this is that for the past SEVERAL years, Apple has always had their Music Event in the first week of September where they launch new iPods (and of course, iPod touches).
Yet, this year they did not have it, nor even alluded to it. Now, first week of October is rumored launch of iPhone 5. The question that it prompts is does the foregoing of Music Event signify something larger about iPod strategy going forward? Or is it just a case of the dog of growth (iPhone) outflanking the tail (iPod).
Phil Schiller has been primed for this role for years. Why would Tim Cook need to present? Also, having Steve Jobs there is a hugh unnecessary distraction.
Publishing multiple rumors about the iPhone 5 is simply every blog's attempt to say later "we told you so back in May". Once again Apple has clearly decided it does not want to be a real company and instead be a "cool" company by not stating release dates for its products. While companies would like to integrate the iPhone and iPad into their enterprises, they don't decide their budgets on the next cool thing. They budget in advance. They play deployments of technology. Especially in this fiscal environment. Apple's continued behavior to shroud itself in "mystery" has always been to its detriment in serious business sales and applications.
I need to upgrade my small business from iPhone 3GS phones now (something I didn't do when the iphone 4 came out 4 months after I bought my 3GS phones) but can't because Apple executives (and the blog writers who salivate over them) do not deem it necessary to act like a real business.
But then again, the consumer/teen market must apparently be where the money is as Cisco and Microsoft continue to eat Apple's lunch in the business enterprise.
It does not take a genius to know roughly which season of the year the next iPhone or iPad would be announced. Whats so difficult about planning ahead for it?
But anyway, Sorry but Apple's biggest iPhone customers ARE NOT businesses who buy iPhone/iPads in bulk. The biggest base is still the general consumer market.
This is the reason why all secrets must be kept to prevent iPhone from being copied in anyway by any competitors.
Early announcement of high-profile product launch will needlessly tip-off competitors infos such as carrier pricing plans, hardware specs of the phones, special features, and designs, etc etc...
We all know its a dog eats dog world out there.
So again, sorry, your companies interest to plan PRECISELY ahead is not in the best interest of Apple overall.
Regarding your last paragraph, you're comparing about a Phone to Cisco's and Microsloth's pc products, they are in different category.
Macs, mac books, apple hardwares and softwares are constantly updated and pre announced by Apple via media and its website, this could not be any more apparent.
And speaking of business enterprises, iPhone was surveyed as the no.1 choice prefered by business peoples and More and MORE businesses, restaurants, airlines, hospitals , etc etc are integrating the iPAD, Mac computers, etc.. into their serious works.
Let's see who will have the biggest lunch in the long run.
Oops, Apple's stocks value seem to be holding the crown at the moment.
About time. It'd better be a damn magical phone, as long as we've been waiting. And no, I have no need to see a frail and weak Steve Jobs. It's Tim Cook's company now.
I more concern about when the iPhone 5 will be release :)
this going to be at Cupertino or Ybera Buena?
All I care about is the damn battery. Why can't they make a battery that lasts more than two hours. Fuq'n'a John Deere... you idiot phone manufacturers can never get it right.
THINK DIFFERENT!
Wow...where's all the ingenuity and originality? This guys looks like a clone of Jobs...a "Jobs wannabe" who now "is."
Apples' Best days are behind it now. Far behind it.
I was told by a TMO person that they'll be carrying it soon, too.
It's getting closer and closer, can't wait what apple has to come up with its upcoming media event.. keep us posted.
Between this announcement, seeing The Man Thing on DWTS, watching the new new 2 Men and a Boi, and Paris H. getting off probation, I'm just gushing with nervous excitement. Somebody! Help me!!!
