Watch Apple’s Celebration of Steve Jobs (Video)

Last Wednesday, Apple held a company-wide memorial for its late co-founder, Steve Jobs, at which CEO Tim Cook; former U.S. Vice President and Apple board member Al Gore; and Jonny Ive, Apple’s head of design, all spoke. It was a moving celebration, I’m told, and today the company decided to share it with the world, posting a video recording of the event to the Apple.com Web site. Certainly worth a watch for anyone interested in Jobs, his legacy and his breadth of vision, so eloquently described by Ive in his memorial speech.

“Steve used to say to me, ‘Hey Jonny, here’s a dopey idea,'” Ive recalled. “And sometimes they were. Sometimes they were truly dreadful. But sometimes they took the air from the room and they left us both completely silent. Bold, crazy, magnificent ideas. Or quiet simple ones, which in their subtlety, their detail, were utterly profound.”

Another memorable moment, Cook’s retelling of Jobs’s parting advice to him: “Don’t ask what I would do. Don’t ask what I would want. Just do what’s right.”

Note: The video requires Safari 4 or 5 on Mac OS X, Safari on iOS 3 or later, or QuickTime 7 on Windows.

The problem with the Billionaire Savior phase of the newspaper collapse has always been that billionaires don’t tend to like the kind of authority-questioning journalism that upsets the status quo.
