Microsoft Acquires Video Search Engine VideoSurf

Another acquisition for Microsoft, this one quieter than most. The company has gobbled up VideoSurf, a video discovery company backed by the likes of former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, SurveyMonkey CEO David Goldberg and Israeli investment fund Pitango.

Price? A reported $70 million.

Details beyond that are slim, as the transaction hasn’t yet been announced, but Microsoft’s intentions here are pretty clear. It will likely use VideoSurf’s real-time visual recognition video search engine to enhance Bing and, perhaps, Xbox Live.

The best and brightest are usually put to work on optimisation. … They will then go forward and solve the inefficiencies, and that’s where 99% of most energy is spent on.
