AT&T Says iPhone 4S Sales Strong, Sees Record Fourth-Quarter Smartphone Sales

AT&T said on Wednesday that iPhone 4S sales “remain strong” following record early sales and noted it has already nearly eclipsed its record for quarterly smartphone sales in just the first two months of the holiday quarter.

The company says it sold about six million smartphones during the first two months of the quarter and noted that December is traditionally one of the company’s strongest sales months. Its prior quarterly high water mark was 6.1 million smartphones sold. AT&T had said in October that it expected to break its record.

The comments came in a speech Wednesday by CFO John Stephens, speaking at a UBS investor conference in New York.

AT&T attributed part of its record sales to the fact that many customers were waiting for the iPhone 4S to upgrade from their current device.
