Samsung Estimates Record Earnings

Samsung Electronics Co. said Friday it estimates record earnings for the fourth-quarter as robust sales of smartphones helped it ride out slower economic growth in its major global markets. The company also said it lost a legal bid to stop sales of rival Apple Inc.’s latest iPhone in Italy.

Samsung, the world’s biggest maker of flat panels, memory chips and flat-screen televisions, and the world’s second-largest handset maker after Nokia Corp., said it estimates fourth-quarter operating profit of between 5.0 trillion won ($4.3 billion) and 5.4 trillion won.
