Another Ginormous Android Phone, This Time From LG
Korea’s LG is following its countrymate Samsung in introducing a smartphone with a 5-inch screen.
LG on Sunday announced the Optimus Vu, which features support for LTE networks in addition to its extremely large display, which carries a 4-by-3 aspect ratio, as opposed to the 16-by-9 format typically used for high-definition content.
The device is sure to draw comparisons to Samsung’s 5.3-inch Galaxy Note, which is just hitting the U.S. market after debuting internationally last year. Both have large screens and the option of using a stylus.
LG said the Optimus Vu will start shipping next month in Korea. It includes 32 megabytes of memory and an 8-megapixel camera. It will, however, begin life with the Gingerbread version of Android. LG said it is already working on an update to bring the Vu up to Ice Cream Sandwich.
The announcement is the start of what is expected to be a flurry of new device introductions around the Mobile World Congress, which takes place next week in Barcelona.
