Verizon: Our LTE Network Is Gonna Be Freakin’ Huge
Verizon currently operates the largest 4G LTE network in the U.S., and it has no plans to relinquish that title anytime soon.
The carrier said today that it plans to double its 4G LTE footprint in 2012, extending it to some 400 markets by year’s end. Come Friday, Verizon will already be more than halfway to that goal, as it adds seven new markets for a grand total of 203 — far, far more than the 28 markets currently served by archrival AT&T, which is also expanding its LTE network.
And to drive usage on its beefed-up LTE network, Verizon says that for the rest of the year it will add only 4G LTE-capable handsets to its portfolio. That will undoubtedly speed consumer LTE adoption, though perhaps not as much as the debut of the LTE iPhone rumored to appear later this year.
