Apple Could Sell 12 Million New iPads This Quarter

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, says last week’s iPad launch was the company’s strongest ever. And while it does include nine days of preorders, opening weekend iPad sales of three million is an impressive feat. How many companies can claim to have sold three million tablets total, let alone in just under four days? Not Motorola. Not Research In Motion. And certainly not Hewlett-Packard.

Three million is a big number — bigger than expected, perhaps. And with the device headed to 24 more countries this Friday, Apple is just getting started.

Indeed, UBS analyst Maynard Um says sales for this quarter could be massive.

“Apple has sold ~750,000 new iPads per day since launch on Friday,” Um said in a note to clients. “If there are no supply shortages, this would imply a run rate of ~12 million new iPads between launch and the end of the quarter. We continue to believe there could be upside to our 12 million estimate for the quarter.”

Notably, Um here is referring to sales of the new iPad only. Which means there’s likely even more upside to that upside he mentions when it comes to sales of the new iPad and iPad 2 both.

The author uses the total number of iPads sold over the weekend (a number that undoubtedly includes iPad2 sales) and uses that number to project sales of 12 million 3rd generation iPads by the end of the quarter.  How did he come to his conclusion without first breaking out the 3 million units into 2nd generation iPads versus 3rd generation iPads.  What if the number of 3rd-generation iPads represented only half that 3 million figure?  That would imply sales of 6 million NEWiPads this quarter, not 12 million.

While I certain hope Apple sells every iPad (3rd generation and 2nd generation) that it can produce, it doesn't serve anyone (except Apple short sellers) to overestimate sales and thus establish unrealistic expectations.

According to Apple's announcement yesterday (http://allthingsd.com/20120319..., it sold 3 million NEW iPads between Friday and Monday. While that figure includes pre-sales (as I mentioned), it does not include iPad 2s.

"What if" Are you serious? I think you may be clutching at straws there. From Apple's press release:

"CUPERTINO, California―March 19, 2012―Apple® today announced it has sold three million of its incredible new iPad®, since its launch on Friday, March 16."

It doesn't mention iPad 2. Those people queuing you saw on TV weren't queuing for an iPad 2, they were queuing for the new iPad which is why Apple sold so many.
