Huawei Aims to Ship 60 Million Smartphones This Year

The smartphone market may be crowded with players, but only a few will be able to make money, at least according to one of the folks in that crowd.

“In (the) future, in the handset industry, only three to four vendors can survive,” Huawei Devices Chairman Richard Yu said in a video interview with Mobile World Live. “We hope we will be one of the survivors.”

Huawei shipped 20 million smartphones last year, up from five million the previous year. This year, the company expects to ship 60 million smartphones, Yu said. Overall, Huawei hopes to be a $100 billion-a-year company in the next decade.

But Yu noted that 95 percent of all the profits in the handset industry are going to two companies: Samsung and Apple.

“The whole industry is consolidating,” Yu said.

At last month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Huawei introduced several new models, including a high-end phone powered by the company’s own quad-core processor.
