Gnip Adds Data From Sina Weibo’s 300M Users

Social-data provider Gnip will provide access to updates on Sina Weibo, the Chinese microblogging service with more than 300 million registered users.

The intent is for Gnip’s social-media monitoring customers to help their own clients keep track of discussions about their brands in China, especially so they can better respond to crises and scandals as they develop.

Gnip was Twitter’s first authorized data reseller, and it also offers data streams from WordPress, Facebook, YouTube and others.

But Sina Weibo is a bit of a different challenge for the Boulder, Colo.-based company. Though a Gnip representative called the data source similar to the Twitter search API, the Sina Weibo documentation is written in Chinese.
