Another RIM Resignation: Top Lawyer to Leave Company

Another executive departure at Research In Motion, the second in as many weeks.

The struggling BlackBerry maker said Monday that chief legal officer Karima Bawa is retiring and will leave the company after 12 years. According to RIM, Bawa has been planning her retirement for some time and will lend a hand in bringing the company’s new chief legal officer up to speed — as soon as it names one. Interesting bit of spin there. If this move has truly been in the works for some time, one would think the company would be naming Bawa’s replacement today as well, right?

But it’s not. And Bawa’s departure follows the resignation of another RIM veteran, head of global sales, Patrick Spence, who left the company last week after 14 years. Both execs take their leave of RIM ahead of what is expected to be another big wave of layoffs, RIM’s second in less than a year. Coincidence?

News of Bawa’s resignation was first reported by Reuters.
