With $261M Pledged, Kickstarter Commits to Sharing Daily Stats

Kickstarter projects are all beautiful and unique snowflakes, but the crowdfunding platform is impressive in aggregate.

Today Kickstarter posted a new stats page that it said would be updated daily, sharing the site’s total number of projects and amount of money committed to them, and breaking everything down by category and whether projects were successful (unlike competitor Indiegogo, Kickstarter does not transact payments for projects that don’t meet their goals).

Kickstarter backers have pledged $261 million to 60,786 projects so far, with $27 million of that refunded and the rest paid out minus between 8 percent and 10 percent in fees. Seven projects have raised more than $1 million.

Film & video and music are by far the largest categories by volume, but theater and dance projects have the highest success rates. More here.

I think the NSA has a job to do and we need the NSA. But as (physicist) Robert Oppenheimer said, “When you see something that is technically sweet, you go ahead and do it and argue about what to do about it only after you’ve had your technical success. That is the way it was with the atomic bomb.”
