The First Look at a Windows Phone 8 Device — And It’s Not From Nokia

Apparently that big partnership with Microsoft doesn’t guarantee Nokia the chance to be first to show new hardware with Windows Phone.

Nokia and Microsoft have scheduled a Sept. 5 event in New York, but Samsung beat its Finnish rival to the punch on Wednesday. At its Unpacked event in Germany, Samsung showed off the ATIV S.

Though it sounds more like an off-road vehicle than a phone, it’s got some impressive specs, including an 8.7-millimeter aluminum case, a 4.8-inch screen with Gorilla Glass 2, and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. It will come with either 16 gigabytes or 32GB of storage, along with a large 2300mAh battery.

Microsoft, which blogged about the new phone, did note that the Samsung phone is just the first of many “amazing” Windows Phone 8 devices to be announced soon. The company first shared details about the next Windows Phone software in June, confirming that it would use the same operating system kernel as the desktop operating system.
