Apple Announces September 12 Media Event: “It’s Almost Here”

Following weeks of rampant speculation, Apple this morning confirmed that it will indeed hold a special media event next week.

Moments ago, the company broadcast invitations to a special event at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater on Sept. 12, a date reported earlier by AllThingsD and iMore. The text of the invition is simple, reading “It’s almost here.” And it offers no details beyond that. But the large “5” that appears in shadow beneath the number 12 blazoned across the invitation strongly suggests that the focus of the event will indeed be the forthcoming iPhone 5, or whatever Apple chooses to call it.

This event is one of two special showcases Apple is expected to hold this fall. As we reported in August, the company is currently planning a second event for October, during which it will debut a smaller version of the iPad, the so-called “iPad mini.”

The release of Apple’s invitation comes a day ahead of two big mobile product announcements from Nokia and Microsoft, and Motorola and Verizon, and two days prior to the event at which Amazon is expected to debut its next-generation Kindle Fire.

Just as the atom bomb was the weapon that was supposed to render war obsolete, the Internet seems like capitalism’s ultimate feat of self-destructive genius, an economic doomsday device rendering it impossible for anyone to ever make a profit off anything again. It’s especially hopeless for those whose work is easily digitized and accessed free of charge.
