Nokia Debuts Lumia 920 With Windows Phone 8, Wireless Charging

As expected, Nokia unveiled its new Lumia phones at an event today in New York, and among the highlights are wireless charging and a more advanced camera.

Along with the Lumia 820, the Nokia Lumia 920 will be one of the company’s first devices to run Windows Phone 8, Microsoft’s updated mobile operating system, and comes with an enhanced 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ touchscreen.

Nokia says the display’s resolution is better than HD and has a faster refresh rate, so text will remain sharp as you scroll through an email or document. It also includes technology from Synaptics that allows the screen to register touches even if you have gloves on or long fingernails. Reading in sunlight should be easier, too, as the display will automatically adjust the color and brightness of the display.

On back of the device, you’ll find an 8.7-megapixel camera that’s capable of recording 1080p HD video and offers more advanced capabilities for capturing better pictures without having to fuss with settings.

Now the shutter stays open longer so it can take clearer and brighter photos. The Lumia 920 also captures 10 times the light of any competitor’s camera and has a “floating lens.” The latter is basically an image stabilization system that reacts to movements and subsequently balances the lens to prevent blurry photos.

As the leaks suggested, the Lumia 920 is getting the PureView branding, but it doesn’t have the megazoom features found on the 41-megapixel PureView 808.

Users will also be able to use the camera to find restaurants and other points of interest using the Nokia City Lens augmented reality app. Also, the Lumia 920 comes with free turn-by-turn navigation out of the box and offline and indoor maps.

With battery life being a big issue with mobile devices, Nokia equipped the Lumia 920 with a 2,000 milliamp battery, which can now be charged wirelessly. Using the Qi wireless charging standard, you can simply place the phone on a wireless charging pad to rejuice the phone battery.

Nokia also announced a partnership with Virgin Atlantic and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf where the companies will feature charging pads at airport clubs and coffee houses.

Other vitals of the 4G LTE-ready Lumia 920 include 32 gigabytes of memory, a dual-core Snapdragon processor and NFC technology.

The Nokia Lumia 920 will be available in white, red, black, gray or yellow. Pricing, availability date and carrier parternships have not been announced at this time.
