Research In Motion Sets January 30 Date for BlackBerry 10 Launch Event

Research In Motion said Monday that it will hold a launch event for its first BlackBerry 10 devices on Jan. 30.

The major revamp to the BlackBerry has been in the works for many months, and comes none too soon for RIM, which has been bleeding market share amid an aging lineup of smartphones.

RIM did not offer new details on the first product, but it has noted it is now in testing with more than 50 carriers around the world. BlackBerry 10 also recently achieved a U.S. government certification that will allow many agencies to start using BlackBerry devices and software as soon as they are available.

“Thanks to our strong partnerships with global carriers and a growing ecosystem of developers, we believe our customers will have the best experience possible with BlackBerry 10,” CEO Thorsten Heins said in a statement. “We are looking forward to getting BlackBerry 10 in the hands of our customers around the world.”

The company said that details on the products and their availability are to be announced at the launch date.

After some delay, RIM has been working toward an early 2013 launch for a while now. The company started accepting apps for the new QNX-based operating system in October.

There has been concern that the launch could slip further, possibly as late as March.
