Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 8.9 Ships Today, but Already Backordered Until December 3

Amazon’s new 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD

The 8.9-inch version of Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD is headed to market a bit earlier than expected. The retailer said Thursday that the $299 Wi-Fi version of the tablet, which was originally slated for retail availability on November 20, began shipping today and will be available tomorrow in Best Buy stores. Its $449 4G LTE sibling, however, won’t ship until next week.

If you were hoping to be among the first to own the larger Fire HD and haven’t yet placed an order, you’ll need to head down to your local Best Buy bright and early tomorrow morning. According to Amazon, the device is already backordered until December 3 due to popular demand.

The tablet market today is very different from the one that existed at the time of the Fire HD 8.9’s unveiling. In the months since its debut, Apple has rolled out an improved 4th generation iPad along with the iPad mini, and Google debuted the $399 Nexus 10 — a 10-inch version of its Nexus 7 touchscreen tablet. Those are two formidable rivals to Amazon’s larger Fire and will surely make this holiday shopping season a very interesting one for the tablet market.

Another gadget you don’t really need. Will not work once you get it home. New model out in 4 weeks. Battery life is too short to be of any use.
