STMicro to Exit Ericsson Joint Venture

The fast-shrinking market for low-cost cellphones is squeezing Europe’s largest semiconductor producer out of the wireless communications business.

Franco-Italian chip maker STMicroelectronics NV said Monday that it plans to exit its cellphone-chip joint venture ST-Ericsson by the third quarter of next year, as part of a broader strategic plan to focus on more profitable businesses like motion sensors and automotive electronics.
