New YouTube “Capture” App Lets You Record, Share Directly From iPhone Screen

We’ve all been there: You pull your iPhone out to capture your kid doing something ridiculously cute, or record that guy face-planting on the treadmill at the gym, and by the time you’ve fumbled with your phone, you’ve missed the moment. Shoot. (Pun intended.)

No more! Google’s YouTube has just rolled out a new app called Capture that lets users immediately shoot video as soon as the app is opened. Once you’ve stopped filming, you can share the video, and it will upload to your platform of choice even after you close the app.

And even better than the video “enhancements” that promise to make your footage Scorsese-worthy, the app will always record in horizontal format — even if you’re holding your phone vertically. (As a recovering video editor who has had to work with elongated video shot on iPhones, I can vouch for how excellent this feature is, however small it may seem.)

Speaking of iPhones: YouTube Capture is only available on iOS devices to start, despite, you know, the whole Google-Android thing. But Google says that an Android version is on the way.

Is YouTube Capture that much faster than opening your iPhone’s camera roll and sliding the button to the little camcorder icon to record video? We haven’t done a side-by-side yet, but feel free to leave your comments below.
