Cisco Teams With AT&T on Home Security

If you thought that the ongoing flirtation that networking giant Cisco Systems has had over the years with consumer products was over, following its killing of the Flip video camera unit and the Umi in-home video conference system, think again.

At the International CES in Las Vegas, Cisco just announced its collaboration with AT&T in a new home-security product. Dubbed AT&T Digital Life, it’s essentially an in-home security and control service that will give its customers control of in-home security cameras, window and door sensors, locks, thermostats, lighting and other things, from a smartphone, tablet or PC. It also sort of fits with that “Internet of Everything” marketing message Cisco uncorked late last year.

Cisco’s role is building the hardware and providing some back-office provisioning for the applications. AT&T plans to roll out the service in eight markets in the U.S. by March, with as many as 50 more markets to follow this year.
