Hockey Season Starts, but NHL’s Video App Stuck on the Bench

That’s two minutes for delay of game.

The strike-shortened professional hockey season started on Saturday, but the NHL’s GameCenter Live streaming app was stuck on the bench.

There were widespread reports from paying subscribers that they were unable to load any of the promised live video from opening night. The league acknowledged the issues in a Twitter posting Saturday night.

“We know you’re having issues with GameCenter and elements of NHL.com,” the league said. “We’re working hard to fix & thank you for your patience!”

The Game Center Live app allows access via Android and iOS phones and tablets as well as various connected TV devices including PlayStation 3, Apple TV and–new this season–the Xbox 360.

Hard-core hockey fans are already disgruntled after a lockout that has cut the season nearly in half. Aiming to ease some of the pain, the NHL announced earlier this week it was discounting the cost of its highest-end app, which allows access to live video of dozens of out-of-market games per week.

Of course, that’s only a way to win back fans if the promised video streams actually work.
